The wonderful collaboration ARTE SU MARTE x TENOHA is back with a great new event of LIVE ART PERFORMANCE!

"The Onigiri Art" is the artist that you can find anywhere on the web with his streetwear creations made of rice, raw fish and seaweed.
Yujia Hu, the artist behind the art name The Onigiri Art, is Chinese boy who works in Milan as Sushi Manager in the family restaurant. He began to "play" with the ingredients he uses every day to create real works of art such as important basketball personalities and the Nike Air Jordan sneakers. His art has then expanded and turned all the most famous streetwear into onigiri.

Bringing Japan to Italy: episode 06 – Takarabune

A few months ago, in conjunction with the Japan Matsuri in Bellinzona, we had the opportunity to interview one of the very few Awa Odori dance troupe: Takarabune!

The Awa Dance Festival (阿波踊り), the largest dance festival in Japan, is held from August 12th to 15th as part of the Bon Festival in Tokushima prefecture of Shikoku in Japan.
The earliest origins of this style of dace are found in the Japanese Buddhist priesthood dances of Nembutsu-odori and hiji-odori of the Kamakura period (1185 – 1333), and also in the kumi-odori, a lively crop dance that was known to last for several days.

The Takarabune group has been traveling the world for years to bring joy and to share the culture of Japanese festivals with all other foreign nations.
In an exclsive interview for Japan Italy Bridge they tell us how they see the relationship between Italy and Japan and their thoughts on our beautiful country. Enjoy!

Hanko Workshop @ TENOHA

Are you ready for June 9th? TENOHA is preparing a very interesting flower and plant theme event with Laura Sauchelli from FATTOAMENO, we are talking exactly about a HANKO Workshop.

What is an Hanko?

Hanko (判子) are custom seals made with wood, plastic or other material widely used in Japanese culture. In Japan, a stamp is often used instead of a signature. This was initially an exclusive of the emperor and his vassals, after which the nobles and samurai also began to use it in the feudal period. The Samurai seal was exclusively used with red ink.
After 1980, precisely after the modernization of Japan, Hanko are used by the whole Japanese society.

Flow Yoga with Oki Satoko @ TENOHA

Something you can’t miss!
Two relaxing and refreshing Flow Yoga sessions in the TENOHA event space together with the teacher OKI SATOKO for one day dedicated to a healthy lifestyle.

But what exactly Flow Yoga - Oishī kokyū is?

In particular, the flow style is a combination of breathing with the Asana position. Slow movements and intensification of breathing, till to the final relaxation with Japanese perfumes.

OKI SATOKO, a woman of great commitment in various fields both in Japan and abroad, is an expert in the field of Flow Yoga with her 12 years of experience as a teacher and supporter of how fundamental the combination of movement and breathing is. In addition to this, from 2017 she is a director and a representative of the Breathtrant company, which deals with the conviction of the importance of proper breathing and "heart health". Her fame is also due to the fact that she was chosen by GAP as an ambassador for the GAP fit line and as a performer in the television program "GINZA YOGA".

With great enthusiasm and great pride, we’ll wait for you at TENOHA for an intense and relaxing experience to be discovered!

Festa del Giappone @ Circolo Magnolia

On June 9, 2019, at the Circolo Magnolia located at Parco Idroscalo, an entire day dedicated to Japanese culture will be held. There will be many workshops, demonstrations and important personalities known in the world of the Rising Sun. Obviously, you can also taste the coveted Japanese food and sake.

Many are the workshop available for the audience! You can find the manga drawing workshop curated by Giappone in Italia, focusing mainly on the character design. Furthermore, you will find the Lykke Anholm workshop, the Italian ambassador of the KonMari method, focusing on the whole philosophy underlying the worldwide phenomenon of Marie Kondo. Also, have you ever heard of Kintsugi? It’s the ancient and very significant Japanese art of repairing ceramics with urushi lacquer and gold dust. The restorative artist Chiara Lorenzetti will explain this in the smallest detail.

A dive into Japanese tradition with some demonstrations, including the Yukata Dressing by Mamiko Ikeda and the evocative Tea Ceremony by Alberto Moro. IFIORINELLARETE takes care of the demonstration of Kokedama, a technique in which a seedling is removed from its own pot and wrapped in a ball made with a mixture of different substrates, covered with fresh moss. The plant created can be placed on a flat surface, or left floating in the air for an even more suggestive effect. The famous Keiko Irimajiri will present her Bentō Showcooking while Luca Vecchi will tell us about the concept of his work Okaa-Sama | Honorable Mother.

20 May - 2 June: CHICKEN NANBAN

宮崎県・チキン南蛮 Chicken Nanban from Miyazaki Prefecture.

Directly from the Kyūshū region, a special karaage fried chicken marinated in sweet and sour sauce and accompanied with tartar sauce. This recipe seems to have its origins in the Iberian peninsula and then it was adapted in Japanese style in the Miyazaki prefecture.

3 June - 16 June: TAI-CHAZUKE

徳島県・ 鯛茶漬け Tai-chazuke (Sea bream with rice in dashi soup) from Tokushima prefecture, located north of Shikoku island, in the southern part of Japan. It’s traditional cuisine is based mainly on the various types of fish and seafood. The famous Taichazuke is served white rice, sea bream, sesame and nori seaweed all accompanied by Japanese dashi sauce. All of this makes the dish delicate and harmonious, a unique flavor that you can hardly forget and find elsewhere.

17 June - 30 June: FRIED OYSTER

広島県 ・かきフライ Fried Oyster by Hiroshima prefecture, located in the south of Japan, facing the inland sea of Seto and the island of Shikoku. The Kaki furai, or fried oysters, is the dish chosen for the journey you’re making in this prefecture, not only for its preparation but also for the high quality of oysters renowned throughout Japan.


長野県・長野そば: Nagano-soba from Nagano prefecture. Here we are in the most central part of Japan, the Chūbu region, from which the Nagano Soba Noodles were chosen for the continuation of our journey. Nagano is a particularly famous area for the production of Soba and for those who don’t know it yet, we are talking about a thin pasta with a dark tone of buckwheat often accompanied by a special cold broth.

15 July - 28 July: HITSUMABUSHI

愛知県・櫃まぶし: Hitsumabushi, the most famous dish of the Aichi prefecture.

The grilled eel, and not cooked as it happens in the rest of Japan, is the protagonist in this unique and crunchy dish that TENOHA gives you the opportunity to taste with white rice and dashi broth.

29 July - 10 August: CHAN-CHAN-YAKI

And here we arrive with our trip to the northernmost prefecture of Japan, Hokkaido. With its 北海道県・ちゃんちゃん焼き  Chan-Chan Yaki, you will have the opportunity to taste a typical dish with a homey flavor. The name of the dish refers to the cooking named “Chacha”, which is an onomatopoeia that describes a quick gesture. It is steamed salmon served with seasonal vegetables, mountain herbs and Miso. The journey began on May 20th with the exclusive Chicken Nanba. If you haven't tried it yet, TENOHA is waiting for you to delight you. However, the chance to taste this amazing this will last only until June 2nd! If you have already tried it, you still have a few days to enjoy it again.

Japan History: Torii Suneemon

Torii Suneemon (1540 - 1575) was a Japanese samurai of the Torii family, known for his courage and for the incredible value demonstrated in the battle of Nagashino (1575). Of his youth, it is known that he was an ashigaru soldier who served Okudaira Sadamasa, a vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu and master of the castle of Nagashino.

On June 17, 1575, after failing to capture Yoshida Castle in Toyohashi, 15,000 of Takeda Katsuyori's samurai attacked Nagashino Castle in modern Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture. Nagashino with only 500 men, was built on top of a cliff, where the Ure and the Kansa rivers divided and served as a natural moat. It was a strategically important castle, guarding the Tokugawa against the threat of northern Takeda. Takeda Katsuyori, son of the famous Takeda Shingen, was busy reaching the capital, Kyoto, in an attempt to gain control of the nation.

To get to Kyoto, they first had to conquer Mikawa and Owari, lands held by allies Tokugawa Ieyasu and Oda Nobunaga. Nagashino Castle was important as it threatened the supply lines of the Takeda clan.

The Takeda forces had surrounded the castle, and the brave Torii volunteered to leave the castle, swim along the river and cut off the nets drawn near the enemy. Later he would have to walk 25 km from Okazaki and call Tokugawa Ieyasu. After warning him and requesting reinforcements, Torii quickly returned to Nagashino where he was captured as he tried to return to the castle.

The story tells of how Torii Suneemon had been tied and crucified with straw ropes in plain sight to his compatriots from Nagashino castle. "Tell them reinforcements will not come, tell them to give up the castle and get out!" one of his captors hissed. Torii looked up at the castle shouting: "Men from the castle of Nagashino... Don't give up! Ieyasu's men are coming! Wait a little longer!" Following his exploit, he was silenced by a spear stuck in the stomach.

The forces of the Tokugawa clan and the Oda allies eventually arrived on the scene a week later with 38,000 soldiers, creating an important turning point in the history of Japan and the samurai war, the battle of Nagashino and Shitaragahara.

It is interesting to know that a Takeda Samurai, Ochiai Michihisa, was so impressed with Torii's loyalty and courage that in a battle he displayed a flag with the image of the crucified Samurai. That flag is now kept in the Tokyo University library.

The martyr Torii was promoted posthumously to the samurai class and his family continued to serve the Okudaira clan until the end of the Edo period. He entered the history books as one of the most courageous and faithful Samurai.
